MD/CEO BanyanTree
Mr. Uzoukwu is a former Fortune 10 senior vice president and co-founder of two previous start-ups, one of which is a 3-time winner of the Microsoft Africa Partner of the Year awards. He is a seasoned executive who has held leadership roles managing cross-functional teams including finance, human resources, manufacturing operations, IT, real estate, corporate communications, HSE, supply chain, and logistics around the world.
Prior to starting BanyanTree, Mr. Uzoukwu was Vice President & Chief Procurement & Supply Chain Officer for the Exploration & Production (E&P) segment of BP Plc., with a $300 million annual budget, responsibility for over $25 billion in annual spend, and leadership of an organization with over 1200 people around the globe.
In 2010 he left BP to start BanyanTree. His first client in Nigeria was Notore Chemical Industries Ltd. where he was the Group Chief Operating Officer. During his time in that position, fertilizer production increased from less than 50MT/month to over 1300MT/day. At Notore he also served as the Chief of Organizational Transformation successfully leading the implementation of a company-wide ERP system and the acquisition of ISO-9001 certification for the company.
Over the course of his career Mr. Uzoukwu has also served as Vice President of Global Procurement, Inventory and Supply Chain Management for Chiquita Brands International (a $5 Billion international marketer of fresh produce), and Avaya Inc. (a $4 billion telecommunications company). Prior to Avaya, he was Director for Corporate Development at Solectron Inc., in which role he successfully led the acquisition of companies worth over $5 billion in the United States, Mexico, Canada, Europe, Japan, Singapore, South Korea, China and Brazil.

Mr. Ayo has over 25 years’ experience in production, sales, supply chain, marketing, business development and strategy in Africa (Nigeria, Morocco and South Africa), France and The UAE, across Manufacturing and Retail of Consumer Goods. He has worked on the development of new products, brand portfolio rationalization, production outsourcing, and turnaround of both production and retail organisations across geographies.
For a brief period, Mr. Ayo was also involved with the Rainforests Project of the Prince of Wales, leading the African Task force into 7 countries in Africa to argue that rainforests are more valuable alive than dead, and to propose ways in which stakeholders could protect rainforests without GDP loss. The taskforce conducted interviews and focus group sessions with stakeholders in government, businesses, the non-profit organisations and civil society organisations as well as indigenous inhabitants of the rain forests.
Between 2008 and 2013, Mr. Ayo led the development of the most comprehensive inputs distribution network in Africa, taking inputs from plant to farmgate in a controlled fashion, and involving more than 3000 individuals and businesses.
Mr. Ayo is a Sloan Fellow of the London Business School, with an M.Sc in Management. He also has an Executive Masters in Public Administration from the Maxwell School in Syracuse University and a B.Sc. in Civil Engineering from the University of Lagos. Mr. Ayo also has an Advanced Certificate in Conflict Studies from The Program for the Advancement of Research on Conflict and Collaboration (PARCC) of the Maxwell School.
